Student Sustainability Center hosts First Clean-Up of the Semester

Written by Samantha Nordstrom

The Student Sustainability Center (SSC) hosted its first clean-up of the spring semester on February 25 at Lee Martinez Park. Roughly 15 people met outside of Dazbog Coffee off Cherry St. and were treated to bagels and coffee provided by the SSC officers.

Using SSC-provided gloves and bags, the students picked up trash and recyclables in and around the Poudre River and surrounding woods from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. They were also instructed to collect any trash that was somewhat clean or able to be cleaned for the CSU Art Club, which is embarking on a project to turn trash into art in the near future.

Fort Collins resident Keziah Friesema, who’s been involved in sustainability since high school, enjoyed meeting people at the clean-up.

“Everyone’s passionate about some sort of [way] of helping the planet,” Friesema said. “The cool thing about groups like this is that you don’t find people that just go wander around the woods and pick up trash anywhere else.”

The SSC organizes about 3-4 clean-ups each semester. These clean-ups often allow the SSC to collaborate with various other student groups, such as Defend Our Future and the Associated Students of Colorado State University (ASCSU).
