This session, co-organized by Hussam Mahmoud, professor of infrastructure at CSU and Co-chair of the NASEM New Voices, explores the role played by young and senior scientific academies in providing advice to meet climate goals &solutions. Five to eight academies will share their work and experience with focus on climate and health. The discussion will include benefits of engaging young academies to address global climate challenges.

The CSU exhibit will highlight a suite of climate research and education activities, including efforts to increase student engagement with climate change issues and projects examining the impact of the fashion industry on Earth’s climate and the effects of climate change on human and animal health.

CSU is the lead organization for the Mountain Sentinels Alliance - which consists of academics, community knowledge holders, Indigenous rights-holders, practitioners, educators, and students - and is focused on identifying and implementing pathways to sustainability across the world’s mountains.
- Dec 3-4, 2023, 5pm-5:45pm, Michigan Tech University Pavilion - Mountain Sentinels participants will be working with other early-career researchers to discuss key takeaways from each day of the COP. Jacob Stewart, Mountain Sentinels Community Director and CSU alum, will co-lead December 4th’s session on finance, trade, gender equality and accountability. Dr. Tual Sawn Khai, Mountain Sentinels Fellow, will tentatively co-lead December 3rd’s session on Health, Relief, Recover and Peace.

- Dec 11, 2023: The United Nations recognizes December 11th as International Mountain Day and this year’s theme is Restoring Mountain Ecosystems. There will be several IMD-related events at COP28 that Mountain Sentinels will participate in along with their partners from FAO, the Mountain Partnership.

The School is responsible for managing CSU’s participation as an official observer organization in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). CSU can request that a small number of people receive credentials for the annual meetings of the UNFCCC Conference of Parties (COP), which is the international body in which negotiations for a global climate change agreement take place.
