Research Summary: Many African countries are adopting environmental policies such as plastic regulations, renewable energy targets, and conservation initiatives to address climate change and environmental degradation. Yet while these policies often look strong on paper, their results vary widely in practice. My research asks why. Through comparative case studies across African countries, I examine how international support and pressure, state capacity, and local buy-in interact to shape policy outcomes. By identifying the conditions under which policies achieve lasting impact, my work helps strengthen the governance systems needed to advance sustainable environmental change in developing nations.
