ECON 460: Economic Development Curriculum Enhancement

This Sustainable/Climate Change Curriculum Project, led by Drs. Umit Shrestha, Srijana Baral, and Niroj Bhattarai from the Colorado School of Public Health, the Warner College of Natural Resources, and the College of Liberal arts, respectively, is dedicated to addressing critical learning gaps in the ECON 460: Economic Development course, with a specific focus on theories and issues relevant to the Global South, particularly in the context of climate change. Collaborating on their expertise, the project endeavors to craft engaging presentations and learning modules for integration into this advanced economics course, that many of our students majoring in Economics and International Studies take. Dr. Shrestha’s module will focus on the importance of health and well-being as pivotal metrics for evaluating sustainable development in the Global South, considering the challenges posed by climate change. Simultaneously, Dr. Baral’s module will explore the impact of community foresting on sustainable development, well-being, and the intricate relationship with climate change in the communities of the Global South. Through this interdisciplinary initiative, the project aspires to deliver a comprehensive understanding of the development dynamics in these regions, emphasizing the pressing issues of climate change on sustainable development.
