Dr. Ed Hall (ESS) and Professor Ben Reynolds (Chemistry) will work in collaboration with two local artists (illustrator, Michael Bussmann, and animator, Chad Seidel) to develop original animated vignettes (3-5 minutes) that illustrate how fundamental chemistry concepts are essential to creating a sustainable future. The primary audiences for these vignettes are the undergraduates who annually enroll in CHEM 107/108, 111/112, or 113/114. These general chemistry course and labs are high touch point undergraduate and AUCC courses that currently lack relevant connections to sustainability. Each of the proposed vignettes will be incorporated directly into each course and embedded within the corresponding laboratory exercises and assignments. The incorporation of video vignettes directly into the laboratory curriculum would have an immediate impact on large numbers of undergraduate students (~ 4000 year-1), exposing them to fundamental connections between chemistry and sustainability early in their college careers. Whereas undergraduate students will be the primary audience for each vignette, each of the above courses are led by graduate teaching assistants, so there would also be a secondary exposure of sustainability principles to graduate students (many of them with no knowledge or background in principles of sustainability).
