This lab covers topics like tonicity, osmosis, diffusion, and cellular structure. We introduced a new sustainability activity in which students are asked to consider how the environment a cell is adapted to impacts how it responds to liquids of different salinity. After observing the impact on cells, students are then asked to apply their knowledge to understanding how osmosis and diffusion apply to two real world issues: how road salt contributes to salinization of freshwater and how reverse osmosis is used to desalinize saltwater to combat water shortages.
