SUMMARY:Diana H. Wall Memorial Lecture w/ guest speaker Rob Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Into the Clear Blue Sky; the Path to Restoring our Atmosphere \nFrom one of the world’s leading climate scientists\, a heart- and mind-changing book that offers a hopeful and attainable vision for restoring the atmosphere and ending the climate crisis. \nClimate change is here. From the millions displaced by the floods in Pakistan to Californian and Canadian towns incinerated by wildfires\, we are experiencing the anguish that climate change causes. Fossil fuels are making the planet unlivable\, and they are deadly. We know that we must cut emissions if we are going to limit the catastrophes\, but is that enough? \nIn Into the Clear Blue Sky\, climate scientist and chair of the Global Carbon Project Rob Jackson explains that we need to redefine our goals. As he argues here\, we shouldn’t only be trying to stabilize the Earth’s temperature at some arbitrary value. Instead\, we can restore the atmosphere itself in a lifetime—and this should be our moral duty. Restoring the atmosphere means reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in the air to pre-industrial levels—starting with super-potent methane—to heal the harm we have done. Emissions must be cut\, first and foremost. But to safeguard a livable planet for future generations\, we must repair the damage we have caused. \nJackson introduces us to the brilliant leaders and innovators behind some of the boldest and game-changing climate solutions under development. When it comes to greenhouse gas mitigation\, our choices matter\, because it is easier to stop emissions from happening than to remove greenhouse gases from the air later. But while mitigation is crucial\, no number of solar panels\, electric cars\, and veggie burgers alone will be enough to halt climate change. Decades of inaction have convinced Jackson that we need to remove greenhouse gases from the air using everything from nature to cutting-edge technologies. \nInto the Clear Blue Sky is a heart- and mind-changing book. Guided by one of the leading scientists in this fight and a deeply gifted storyteller\, we learn why we should all feel hopeful. One way or another\, we will restore the planet together. The question is how\, and how long will it take? \nJoin us for the Diana H. Wall Memorial Lecture with guest speaker Rob Jackson. Rob is the Chair of the Global Carbon Project\, Senior Fellow at Stanford’s Woods Institute for the Environment and Precourt Institute for Energy\, Professor at Stanford University\, and the Chair of the SoGES External Advisory Board. \n

SUMMARY:Managing the Planet: Living in the Pyrocene
DESCRIPTION:Living in the Pyrocene: Managing the Changing Risks from Forest Fires \nDocumented warming and drying of climate over the last several decades have significantly increased fire-season fuel aridity\, and fostered an environment favorable for devasting fires. In addition\, warmer winters due to climate change enable insect infestations to be more effective at killing and drying out large expanses of trees\, which become the available fuel for ignition by lightning strikes. As fire season is now much longer than it was a half a century ago\, the threat to biodiversity\, the global hydrological cycle\, and global climate is ominous. \nOur CSU panelists will discuss how climate change is manipulating the shape of our planet through fire and the implications this has on human health\, the environment and our future. \nPanelists: \nSheryl Magzamen\, Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences\nCamille Stevens-Rumann\, Forest and Rangeland Stewardship\nJeff Pierce\, Atmospheric Science \nModerator: Gene Kelly\, SoGES Faculty Research Liaison\, Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station and Associate Dean of Extension

SUMMARY:Special Guest Lecture: Eduardo S. Brondizio "The place of place-based actions for sustainability in Amazonia"
DESCRIPTION:The place of place-based actions for sustainability in Amazonia\nThis presentation provides an overview of recent and ongoing research on the emergence and experiences of place-based initiatives advancing social and environmental goals in the Brazilian Amazon. While the eyes of the world have followed the accelerated and destructive transformation of Amazonia\, another remarkable\, yet largely invisible\, transformation has been taking place around the region. During recent decades\, initiatives by rural and indigenous communities\, organizations\, and collaborative networks have emerged throughout Amazonia. These initiatives focus on myriad issues: rights and governance of land and natural resources\, production system transitions\, value-aggregation\, associativism and cooperativism\, gender and youth inclusion\, biodiversity restoration\, food security\, health\, and beyond. Increasingly\, they have become key players in local and regional environmental governance\, public goods provisioning\, employment opportunities\, and the regional economy. These efforts are up against tremendous socioeconomic\, infrastructural\, political\, and climate change challenges\, to which they often respond through innovative institutional arrangements\, new alliances and partnerships\, but in many cases struggle to endure. The presentation will provide a historical context to these initiatives and reflect on the extent to which place-based initiatives can be sustained and amplified in a conflictive and changing regional context. I will discuss the possible role of emergent alliances and partnership between community\, public\, and private sectors and their role in addressing common problems and to leverage new opportunities to promote just sustainability in Amazonia. \nAbout the speaker: \nEduardo S. SUMMARY:Designing with other creatures
DESCRIPTION:Synthetic genomics is an emerging field that aims to design and build larger stretches of DNA than ever before\, at the scale of chromosomes and even whole genomes. How does this field invite new ways of working with other-than-human creatures? Ways of thinking about multispecies flourishing as a scientific aim? About how diverse perspectives—art and design\, social science and humanities\, food and fermentation—are necessary to address those questions? Join us for a panel discussion among a synthetic biologist\, a social scientist\, a designer\, and a cheese specialist about designing with other organisms. As even more food for thought\, we’ll have cheese to taste and a custom farmhouse ale from Odell on tap. \nThis event is co-sponsored by SoGES\, the NSF-UKRI co-funded “Future Organisms” project\, Odell\, and Murray’s Cheese. \nPANELISTS –\nGrace Chuang: Freelance Art Director and Marketer\nDr. Arjun Khakar: Assistant Professor\, College of Natural Sciences and Plant Synthetic Biologist – Colorado State University\nDr. Emily Scher: Lead Computational Biologist – Neochromosome\nJosh Windsor: Affineur – Murrays Cheese \nMODERATOR –\nJane Calvert: Professor\, Science and Technology Studies – University of Edinburgh
