SUMMARY:Managing the Planet :: AI Impacts on Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence is shaping industries\, research\, and daily life—but what does it mean for sustainability? The rapid expansion of AI requires enormous energy and water resources\, even as researchers work to make systems more efficient and less resource-intensive. At the same time\, AI applications are transforming human–environment relationships and raising new questions about equity\, adaptation\, and policy. This panel will bring together CSU experts to explore the sustainability impacts of AI—from data center energy use and water demands to broader implications for resource allocation and our changing relationship with the environment. \nPanelists: \nTamee Albrecht\, Department of Ecosystem Science and Sustainability\nClint Carney\, Colorado River Policy Specialist\, Colorado Water Conservation Board\nJames Hale\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Sociology\nSudeep Pasricha\, Professor\, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering \nModerator: Gene Kelly\, SoGES Faculty Research Liaison\, Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station and Associate Dean of Extension

SUMMARY:Managing the Planet | Managing the next outbreak: Mountain Pine Beetles and the Future of Colorado's Forest Communities
DESCRIPTION:Managing the next outbreak: Mountain Pine Beetles and the Future of Colorado’s Forest Communities \nThe mountain pine beetle has reshaped millions of acres of Colorado’s forests\, but what does that mean for the communities who live\, work\, and recreate here? \nThis panel brings together experts in tree health and beetle-associated fungi\, forest ecology and management\, statewide forest protection strategy\, and forest insect science to discuss how Colorado can better anticipate and manage future outbreaks. The conversation will explore what drives beetle populations\, how outbreaks intersect with wildfire risk and water resources\, and what coordinated science\, management\, and policy efforts are underway to strengthen forest resilience. \nPanelists: \nMatt McCombs\, State Forester and Director\, Colorado State Forest Service\nJane Stewart\, Associate Professor\, Department of Agricultural Biology\nTony Vorster\, Research Scientist\, Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory\nDan West\, State’s Forest Entomologist\, Colorado State Forest Service \nModerator: Gene Kelly\, SoGES Faculty Research Liaison\, Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station and Associate Dean of Extension

SUMMARY:SoGES Community Coffee Hour
DESCRIPTION:We’re hosting SoGES Community Coffee Hours/Lunches to create space for conversation and networking among members of our SoGES community (anyone new or SoGES-curious is welcome too). We’ll start with some lightly facilitated discussion on a timely topic related to sustainability to spark discussion\, followed by time to socialize\, catch up\, and meet others. Drop in or out any time during the hour. \nFor March\, we want to dive into a topic that is on everyone’s mind: the vocabulary and rhetoric of sustainability research right now. Faculty are increasingly navigating questions of whether (and how) to use terms like climate change or justice in grants\, proposals\, and papers. We will have a candid discussion on the strategic tradeoffs of these terms—exploring what we gain or lose with different audiences when we use specific keywords. SUMMARY:Prairie Fortified: Shelterbelts and Conservation in the Great Plains
DESCRIPTION:The Sustainable Landscape Collaboratory presents: \nSpeaker Dr. David Vail\, Professor of History\, University of Nebraska at Kearney \nBeginning in the 1930s\, farmers\, ranchers\, and agricultural scientists met informally to discuss designing protective bulwarks against growing environmental disasters. New conservation strategies including planting trees as windbreaks and shelterbelts would come to characterize a farm-based conservation civil defense through a series of climate\, weather\, soil\, disease\, drought\, and pesticide studies conducted in the 1950s and 1960s. These trees of defense represented a significant embrace of alternative agricultural strategies\, moving their efforts from a rescue science to semi-permanent environmental fortifications. \nDiscussant Bill Romme\, professor emeritus of forestry and fire ecology at CSU. \nRSVP at Nicholas.Young@colostate.edu

SUMMARY:Managing the Planet | People\, Place\, & Planet : The Local Face of Climate Vulnerability
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is often talked about in global terms\, rising seas\, shifting temperatures\, and planetary tipping points. But its impacts are felt close to home\, in our neighborhoods\, watersheds\, farms\, and communities. This panel brings together leading scholars in environmental ethics\, climate adaptation\, and social vulnerability to explore what climate change means here\, for the people and places of northern Colorado and beyond. How do local communities bear risks they did little to create? What does a just and meaningful response look like? And what do we owe one another as the climate continues to shift? Join us for an honest\, grounded conversation about the human face of our changing planet.  \nPanelists: \nKaren Bailey\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Environmental Studies\, CU Boulder \nPatricia Romero-Lankao\, Canadian Excellence in Research Chair of the Network for Equity in Sustainability Transitions (CERC NEST)\, University of Toronto Scarborough \nDavid Schlosberg\, Director of the Sydney Environment Institute and Professor of Environmental Politics\, University of Sydney \nKen Shockley\, Professor and Chair\, Department of Philosophy\, CSU \nSarah Walker\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Human Dimensions of Natural Resources\, CSU \nModerator: Dale Lockwood\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Biology and School of Global Environmental Sustainability

\nFor our April event: Can pollinators serve as “gateway bugs” for tackling broader conservation issues like habitat restoration and climate adaptation? Coloradoans approve of pollinators more than they approve of the habitats pollinators need – how do we correct that misalignment (and are pollinators themselves the best vehicle? Or are other approaches like water conservation more effective?)? Conversation facilitated by John Mola\, Department of Forest and Rangeland Stewardship. \n  \n\n \n \n SoGES Community Coffee RSVP\n RSVP form for SoGES community coffee \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Attending?*\n \n \n Yes\n \n \n \n No
