SUMMARY:SoGES Community Coffee Hour
DESCRIPTION:We’re hosting SoGES Community Coffee Hours/Lunches to create space for conversation and networking among members of our SoGES community (anyone new or SoGES-curious is welcome too). We’ll start with some lightly facilitated discussion on a timely topic related to sustainability to spark discussion\, followed by time to socialize\, catch up\, and meet others. Drop in or out any time during the hour. \nFor March\, we want to dive into a topic that is on everyone’s mind: the vocabulary and rhetoric of sustainability research right now. Faculty are increasingly navigating questions of whether (and how) to use terms like climate change or justice in grants\, proposals\, and papers. We will have a candid discussion on the strategic tradeoffs of these terms—exploring what we gain or lose with different audiences when we use specific keywords. Joined by Sam Ernst\, Dinaida Egan\, and Hilary Galey. \n  \n\n\n \n \n SoGES Community Coffee RSVP\n RSVP form for SoGES community coffee \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Attending?*\n \n \n Yes\n \n \n \n No

SUMMARY:Managing the Planet :: AI Impacts on Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence is shaping industries\, research\, and daily life—but what does it mean for sustainability? SUMMARY:Managing the Planet :: Migration: Birds and Blooms
DESCRIPTION:Migration- Birds and Blooms \nClimate change is shifting the rhythms of life across the planet. Rising temperatures\, altered rainfall patterns\, and extreme weather are changing when and where species move. For migratory birds and pollinators\, these changes can be life-altering—and sometimes life-threatening. \nBirds rely on seasonal cues to begin their long journeys across continents. But as spring arrives earlier in some regions and food sources bloom out of sync\, many birds are arriving too late to feed or nest. Some are changing their routes or skipping migrations altogether\, disrupting ecosystems that depend on them. \nPollinators—like bees\, butterflies\, and even hummingbirds—are also on the move. As their habitats shift with the climate\, they may leave behind the plants they once pollinated\, breaking ancient relationships that sustain biodiversity and agriculture. Crops and wild plants alike could suffer. \nThis panel explores the delicate timing and interconnectedness of migration and pollination in a changing climate—and what it means for ecosystems\, food security\, and the future of life on Earth. \nPanelists:\nLiba Pejchar\, Professor\, Fish\, Wildlife\, and Conservation Biology\nJohn Mola\, Assistant Professor\, Forest and Rangeland Stewardship\nKristen Ruegg\, Assistant Professor\, Biology \nModerated by: \nDale Lockwood\, Assistant Professor\, Departments of Biology and School of Global Environmental Sustainability \n

SUMMARY:Diana H. Wall Memorial Lecture w/ guest speaker Rob Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Into the Clear Blue Sky; the Path to Restoring our Atmosphere \nFrom one of the world’s leading climate scientists\, a heart- and mind-changing book that offers a hopeful and attainable vision for restoring the atmosphere and ending the climate crisis. \nClimate change is here. From the millions displaced by the floods in Pakistan to Californian and Canadian towns incinerated by wildfires\, we are experiencing the anguish that climate change causes. Fossil fuels are making the planet unlivable\, and they are deadly. We know that we must cut emissions if we are going to limit the catastrophes\, but is that enough? \nIn Into the Clear Blue Sky\, climate scientist and chair of the Global Carbon Project Rob Jackson explains that we need to redefine our goals. As he argues here\, we shouldn’t only be trying to stabilize the Earth’s temperature at some arbitrary value. Instead\, we can restore the atmosphere itself in a lifetime—and this should be our moral duty. Restoring the atmosphere means reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in the air to pre-industrial levels—starting with super-potent methane—to heal the harm we have done. Emissions must be cut\, first and foremost. But to safeguard a livable planet for future generations\, we must repair the damage we have caused. \nJackson introduces us to the brilliant leaders and innovators behind some of the boldest and game-changing climate solutions under development. When it comes to greenhouse gas mitigation\, our choices matter\, because it is easier to stop emissions from happening than to remove greenhouse gases from the air later. But while mitigation is crucial\, no number of solar panels\, electric cars\, and veggie burgers alone will be enough to halt climate change. Decades of inaction have convinced Jackson that we need to remove greenhouse gases from the air using everything from nature to cutting-edge technologies. \nInto the Clear Blue Sky is a heart- and mind-changing book. Guided by one of the leading scientists in this fight and a deeply gifted storyteller\, we learn why we should all feel hopeful. One way or another\, we will restore the planet together. The question is how\, and how long will it take? \nJoin us for the Diana H. Wall Memorial Lecture with guest speaker Rob Jackson. Rob is the Chair of the Global Carbon Project\, Senior Fellow at Stanford’s Woods Institute for the Environment and Precourt Institute for Energy\, Professor at Stanford University\, and the Chair of the SoGES External Advisory Board. \n

SUMMARY:Managing the Planet: Living in the Pyrocene
DESCRIPTION:Living in the Pyrocene: Managing the Changing Risks from Forest Fires \nDocumented warming and drying of climate over the last several decades have significantly increased fire-season fuel aridity\, and fostered an environment favorable for devasting fires. In addition\, warmer winters due to climate change enable insect infestations to be more effective at killing and drying out large expanses of trees\, which become the available fuel for ignition by lightning strikes. As fire season is now much longer than it was a half a century ago\, the threat to biodiversity\, the global hydrological cycle\, and global climate is ominous. \nOur CSU panelists will discuss how climate change is manipulating the shape of our planet through fire and the implications this has on human health\, the environment and our future. \nPanelists: \nSheryl Magzamen\, Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences\nCamille Stevens-Rumann\, Forest and Rangeland Stewardship\nJeff Pierce\, Atmospheric Science \nModerator: Gene Kelly\, SoGES Faculty Research Liaison\, Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station and Associate Dean of Extension

SUMMARY:The IPBES invasive species report: insights for mountain environments
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture from Dr. Aníbal Pauchard \nPauchard will discuss the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) report on invasive species and what this means for mountain environments. His talk will focus on ecology of biological invasions and their impact on biodiversity and ecosystem functions. \nDr. Pauchard Bio: \nI am Professor at the Faculty of Forest Sciences in the University of Concepción\, Chile and currently\, Director of the Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity (IEB). I was also one of the founders of the Laboratory of Biological Invasions (LIB). \nMy research is focused mainly on the ecology of biological invasions and their impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem functions. My collaborators and I have been looking at larger intercontinental scales. I am also interested in the conservation of natural areas and how biodiversity should be conserved across the whole anthropogenic gradient from protected areas to urban environments. In recent years\, I have been interested on environmental policy and how conservation can be move to real action. \nI have published over 150 indexed publications\, more than 10 book chapter and three books. I am associated editor in the journals Biological Invasions\, Conservation Letters\, Perspectives in Plant Ecology\, Evolution and Systematics among others. I have received several awards including the 2018 Cooper Award by the Ecological Society of America (ESA). In the last 3 years\, I have served as a Lead Author for the IPBES Regional Assessment of the Americas and as co-chair of the IPBES invasive species assessment.
