"GrowthBusters" Screening and Discussion

Date: Thursday, October 2nd, 6:00PM-8:00PM

Location:  Lory Student Center Theatre

"GrowthBusters: Hooked on Growth" is a documentary film that asks the most critical question of our time: How do we come a sustainable civilization? It takes a unique approach among modern environmental documentaries: Rather than dispensing facts about climate change; peak energy, food and water; and bio-diversity loss, it examines the cultural barriers that prevent us from acting rationally. It asks why population conversations are so difficult to have, and why a roaring economy is more important to us than a survivable planet. It explores our obsession with community growth and economic growth. "GrowthBusters" holds up a mirror, encouraging us to examine the beliefs and behaviors we must leave behind, and the values we need to embrace, in order that our children can survive and thrive.

This film is approximately one hour in duration. Following the move, Dave Gardner, the film's producer, writer, and director, will give a short talk highlighting some of the more important topics from the documentary.

This event is FREE and open to the public.

"DamNation" Screening

Saturday, May 10, 2014 - 7:00PM

Location: Lory Student Center Theatre

This powerful film odyssey across America explores the sea change in our national attitude from pride in big dams as engineering wonders to the growing awareness that our own future is bound to the life and health of our rivers.  Dam removal has moved beyond the fictional Monkey Wrench Gang to go mainstream.  Where obsolete dams come down, rivers bound back to life, giving salmon and other wild fish the right of return to primeval spawning grounds, after decades without access.  DamNation's majestic cinematography and unexpected discoveries move through rivers and landscapes altered by dams, but also through a metamorphosis in values, from conquest of the natural world to knowing ourselves as part of nature.  This screening is FREE and open to the public.
